Area details
The beautiful Salina (the second largest island in the Aeolian Archipelago included by UNESCO in the List of World Heritage) takes its name from the “saline”, salt pans located in the small hamlet of Lingua. Its ancient Greek name was Didyme (twin mountains), due to the presence of two volcanic peaks on its territory: Mount Porri (870 metres high) and Mount Fossa delle Felci (982 metres high), the highest mountain in the Archipelago. The island is divided in three municipalities: Santa Marina, Leni and Malfa. Another small hamlet - Pollara - was the scenario for several scenes from the movie "the Postman", with Massimo Troisi. Most of the island territory is verdant all the year round, and farming is mostly based on the production of Malvasia grapes and capers.
Exploring the crystal clear island waters, its rocky sea backdrops filled with myriads of multicoloured fish, its small inlets, the hidden pebbled beaches and the imposing rocky cliffs jutting out on the sea will leave you simply breathless.
