A chance to experience authentic Sicilian rural life with all the mod cons! Mariuccia is located in a small agricultural town in the Sicani hills, within easy reach of the beaches on the south coast and several of the island’s top cultural attractions. With a large pool, billiard room, table tennis and plenty of outdoor space, it is one of our top villas for groups of friends and extended families.

Take a deep breath and immerse yourself in the simplicity of rural life in a beautiful villa, surrounded by woodland, on a three acre estate in Burgio in southern Sicily. Recently restored to a very high quality, the villa has a wonderfully secluded pool area and a very striking covered patio for ‘al fresco’ dining.

Outside: The villa has a huge garden, bordered by Mediterranean plants, oak and olive trees, with a large pool that provides the perfect spot for sunbathing and a cooling dip. A spacious patio wraps round the villa, cleverly designed to provide separate areas including an ‘al fresco’ dining area with huge shady umbrellas; a table-tennis table; and close by, a barbecue and wood-burning oven.

Inside: Enter the villa from the front patio, straight into the living-room which is decorated in warm, yellow hues and has an open fire-place and dining area. A fully-fitted kitchen to the left of the living-room opens out directly on to the back patio to the barbecue and wood-burning oven. The master bedroom, with en suite bathroom, one double bedroom, a twin bedroom (which can be converted into a double) and a large bathroom with shower, are all on the ground floor.

Up on the first floor, there are two more double bedrooms, a bathroom with shower and a billiard room which leads out to a large terrace with wonderful views of the valley and village below.

Mariuccia is a world away from the more touristy beach resorts of Taormina and Cefalù, accessible from the A-road that links Palermo and Sciacca, and ultimately along an unmarked road past grazing Tibetan goats and through thickly-forested terrain.

Burgio itself is a small agricultural town, famous for its yellow-and green hand-painted ceramics, approximately 70kms west of Agrigento in the south of the island. Surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, almond trees and citrus plantations, it is very much a traditional Sicilian village, popular for its handcrafted bells and ceramics and close to the mountain top village of Caltabellotta which is visible from the villa.

Spend lazy days on the sandy beaches of Sciacca (20 minutes’ drive) and explore the Torre Salsa, a nature reserve comprising 6 km of wild coast and sandy beaches, inhabited by seagulls and sea turtles.

Travelling up towards Agrigento and the archaeological park of the Valley of the Temples, pass through the village of Porto Empedocle, native home of the much- loved writer Andrea Camilleri.

Visit Mariuccia out-of-season at Easter when the streets of Burgio come alive with colourful processions accompanied by traditional local food. Watch a video of the Easter Monday procession in Burgio here. In February, Carnival fever takes over in nearby Sciacca, home to one of Sicily’s most popular carnivals and well worth a visit for its huge Mardi Gras parade.

Golf fans can take advantage of the proximity of Rocco Forte Golf Resort with its 18-hole course.

Access to the villa is currently via a dirt track.

The pool is open to guests from June 13th to September 25th.
