Overview

Get a flavour of rural Sicilian life in this former Sicilian baglio near Modica, set amidst dry-stone walls and surrounded by the countryside of south-east Sicily.

Property

The owners of Pietra Bianca have restored the property from its original form as a classic rural baglio, traditionally a manor house with stables, courtyard and a tiny church, successfully preserving its atmosphere and uniqueness whilst bringing it into the 21st century.

Outside: The traditional courtyard remains largely unchanged, encircled by dry stone walls and still home to a magnificent centuries-old olive tree, but with the welcome addition of an attractive jacuzzi for 9 people (warmed by the sun but otherwise unheated) together with tables, chairs and umbrellas. At one end of the courtyard, a covered veranda provides the perfect spot for al fresco dining and there is also an outdoor kitchen, barbecue and laundry room.

There is plenty of space to park at the back of the house, before you enter the property grounds.

Inside: Decorated in shades of neutral and tastefully furnished, the overall feel is modern and stylish, with the added bonus of several well-preserved original features.

Entry to the property is up a couple of steps directly from the courtyard and into the elegant living/dining area. The fabulous slate grey floor tiles and stone arches still remain of what was originally the baglio’s chapel (a form of an altar still remains at one end of the room), but the room is now furnished with large leather sofas and a rather chic glass dining table with pristine white upright chairs. A doorway leads straight into a compact but well-equipped kitchen, with an informal dining table and its own access out to the courtyard.

There are two bedrooms on the ground floor: an en suite double, with a walk-in wardrobe, that overlooks the courtyard; and a lovely twin bedroom (can be converted to a double). The second bedroom is accessed from an attractive hallway, with a sofa, and stairs leading to the first floor.

The first floor is best suited to families with a quadruple suite: a double bedroom with en suite bathroom and a twin room that is accessible only from the double bedroom. Both rooms have pitched ceilings. The first floor landing, at the top of the stairs, has a small seating area and overlooks the kitchen.

Local sights

The beaches of south-east Sicily are quite varied with those around Marina di Modica (10 km) particularly recommended for surfers and windsurfers. Sun beds and umbrellas are available for rent both here and at Pozzallo, where the sand is white and seemingly infinite. There are also several lidos at Sampieri and the beaches here are slightly less manicured.

The nearest shops and restaurants are within walking distance, approximately 1 km away, at Cava d’Ispica.

This is the very heart of Baroque Sicily and Modica (9 km), Ragusa Ibla, Noto and Scicli are all close by. Siracusa, home to one of the largest ancient Greek theatres in the world, hosts a highly-regarded Greek drama festival in May and June.

If you enjoy walking and hiking, the Cava d’Ispica and the nature reserves at Vendicari and Cassibile are well worth a visit.

Local experiences

In Sicily, Modica’s renowned Bonajuto chocolate factory means that the city and confectionery go hand in hand. Try their cinnamon and vanilla flavoured chocolate or the very typical almond-filled Modican impanatigghi biscuits. For those interested in learning more about Sicilian food, ask us about our local cookery classes.

This part of Sicily is the land of Montalbano, the island’s most famous fictional detective. The landscape around the villa is typical of the scenery shot in the series and it is possible to visit some of the sights and towns featured.

For the best inland views, head to Ragusa Ibla where the panorama from the Chiesa di S. Maria delle Scale is pretty much unbeatable. For a more coastal experience, we recommend the pretty fishing village of Marzamemi where you can wander through the Arabic old town, gaze out at the colourful boats bobbing in the little harbour and linger over a leisurely meal in the shade of a seafront restaurant.

Extras

The jacuzzi is open to guests from April 22th to October 27th.
