Taormina’s Greek Theatre

Villas in Sicily near Taormina

TaorminaThe charm and romantic appeal of Taromina’s theatre cannot be described in a few words. Just visit the place and give vent to your own feelings.

The Greek-Roman theatre in Taormina, the second largest theatre in Sicily after the Greek theatre in Syracuse, is endowed with a splendid view: a hole on the stage background frames Schirò bay and Mount Etna. The cavea (the steps where the audience took their seat) is carved out of the rock of Mount Tauro and is divided into nine cunei (wedge-shaped seating sections) with twenty-eight lines of steps. The orchestra (where the chorus danced and played) measures 35m in diameter. It was used as an arena for fights with animals during Roman times.

The theatre has hosted the “David di Donatello Award” ceremony for a long time, but nowadays it hosts Taormina Arte International Festival during the summer.
