What’s in a Label?

When choosing a wine, you may find four main classifications:

D.O.C (denominazione d’origine controllata) (Registered Designation of Origin).
D.O.C.G (denominazione d’origine controllata e garantita) (Registered and Certified Designation of Origin).
I.G.T (indicazione geografica tipica) (Regional Geographic Indication).
Vino da Tavola (table wine).

D.O.C wines are produced respecting certain restrictions, but their real quality is not certified in the label.
D.O.C.G wines have to meet the same requirements, but their label certifies their quality, tested by government inspectors.
I.G.T is a recent classification including all those wines not meeting D.O.C. and D.O.C.G. requirements, but likewise coming from the same territories and meeting high-quality standards, though not so restrictive as D.O.C. and D.O.C.G wines.
