Cefalù

Villas in Sicily near Cefalù

CefalùA long and narrow plain near Himera river skirts the coast between Termini Imerese and Cefalù. It is crowned by the peaks of Palermo’s mountains and the majestic and remote massif of Madonie Mountains. On clear days you can see as far as the Aeolian Islands. The landscape is rich in contrasts: an industrial area marked by the towers of a power station stretches next to sandy beaches and sea resorts. The lands cultivated with artichokes not far from here are the pride and glory of this territory. Ancient ruins evoke both an ancient and a recent past: they recall the battles of Greeks against Carthaginians at the mouth of Himera river (Himera Archeological Park) and Targa Florio races. The latter started from the racing circuit in Floriopoli (near Cerda, where a small museum is dedicated to the race) and climbed the hairpin curves on Madonie Mountains. The highway, as an ancient Roman aqueduct, winds along the coast and penetrates into the folds of the island interiors, surrounding the bulk of Madonie Mountains. While driving you may admire the wonderful and contrasting landscape underneath.

One of the most recommended stops is Cefalù, a wonderful and lively sea-town. It lies on the promontory in the east of Termini Imerese and it’s dominated by a calcarenite rock called La Rocca. The village has retained its medieval appearance around the imposing Norman Cathedral, built by Roger II in the XII century. The narrow streets of the historical centre are lined with buildings featuring elaborate architectural decorations. The several churches you may find on the main road reflect Cefalù’s status of leading bishopric town. The fishermen’s quarter, with its old little houses clustered along the seafront, is very appealing, as is the long beach with fine sand, considered one of the most beautiful stretches on the northern coast. Cefalù is very popular among tourists, to whom it may offer a variety of bars, restaurants, hotels and nice souvenir shops.
