Taormina’s Greek Theatre
The charm and the romantic appeal of the theatre can not be described in a few words. It would be better visit the place and give vent to one’s feelings.
The Greek theatre of Taormina, the second largest theatre on Sicily after the theatre in Syracuse, is endowed with a splendid view: a hole on the background of the stage frames the bay of Schirò and the Mount Etna. The cavea (the space for the audience) is carved out of the rock of Mount Tauro and is divided in nine cunei (wedge-shaped seating sections) with twenty-eight steps.
The orchestra (the space between the audience and the stage) measures 35m in diameter. It hosted theatre performances under the Greeks, and it was adapted for use as an arena for Roman "spectacle entertainment".
The theatre housed the “David di Donatello” award ceremony for long time, whereas now it hosts the international festival Taormina Arte in the summer.
