Overview

Caltagirone, the capital of Sicilian ceramics, rises at 610m above sea level in an area separating the central provinces of Enna and Caltanissetta, and the south-eastern Ragusa and Syracuse. The surrounding landscape is a succession of rolling hills, cultivated fields, woods, vineyards and olive groves, with the sea of Gela coast in the distance. The villa rises on a hill, exactly in front of Caltagirone historical centre, laying as a wonderful Christmas crib on three adjoining hills. The property stretches for 24.000 square metres, occupied by centuries-old olive trees, almond trees, brooms and aromatic herbs, Mediterranean plants and flowers. The silence in the countryside is only broken by the chirping of birds and the occasional barking of a dog. If you need a revitalizing holiday, but don't want to leave Sicily without visiting a few of its most interesting places, then La Loggia is just perfect for you. Peace, rest and fun, and so much to see all the year round. The image of a noble, rich, inventive, dreamy Sicily in this beautiful town.

Property details

The villa, recently built, is inspired by the art nouveau style typical in Caltagirone in the early 1900. The contours of main door and windows are adorned with a lovely pressed terracotta border, and a pretty decoration also follows the house upper perimeter. A little aside, a centuries-old olive tree seems to cautiously welcome you, as a faithful watchdog. The wide panoramic terrace on the back opens onto a fantastic postcard of Caltagirone, which looks even more impressive at night, with its miryad little lights. In the garden, an inviting swimming pool peeps out in the green. Outodoors you can comfortably eat your meals and have fun with the barbecue, obviously decorated with ceramic tiles from Caltagirone.
Both from the terrace and the main door you can enter the heart of the house, a spacious and bright living/dining room with open-plan kitchen, characterized by two powerfully scenographic elements: a gorgeous copper fireplace decorated with handcrafted ceramics - separating the kitchen from the living and dining areas - and a colourful column with a lemon tree in relief - a further homage to the art nouveau style inspiring the house decoration. The walls are wrapped by a warm apricot tinge, so that - whatever the season is - the sun seems always shining here! A door hides a laundry room and a little bathroom.
On the left of the living room, a corridor leads to the rest of the house: a pretty bathroom with jacuzzi and shower, a large walk-in wardrobe, a sober double bedroom with tester bed, a lovely twin, and another double bedroom with tester bed and panoramic view.
From the ground floor, a staircase leads to a cozy and warm TV room, where you can relax reading, chatting or watching your favourite program.

Area details

Caltagirone is a Unesco Site thanks to its monumental heritage, centuries-old ceramics tradition and picturesque folklore events, among which Easter celebrations, the “Scala Infiorata” between May and June, the “Scala Illuminata” between July and August, and the Christmas Cribs Exhibitions, to which an International Museum is dedicated.
At about 20 km from the villa you can walk in the Bosco di Santo Pietro Nature Reserve, or in Niscemi's Cork Forest.
In the surroundings we suggest you to visit Piazza Armerina – where you can gaze at the splendid mosaics of the Roman Villa del Casale – Ragusa Ibla, Modica and Scicli – other Unesco Sites – and Catania, Enna and Caltanissetta – each with gorgeous historical centres. Syracuse is 106 km away – with its imposing Greek-Roman remains and Ortigia baroque Isle – and Agrigento - with its grandiose Valley of the Temples – is 110 km away.
Finally, if you wish to spend a few days at the seaside, the sandy south-coast beaches are at 30 km distance from the villa.

Feedback from clients staying at La Loggia

  • Emma Elston | June 2010

We had a lovely time. I miss it already.
The villa was lovely, the views are amazing. I enjoyed quite a few bottles of wine on the terrace, i just couldn't get enough of those amazing views.
We really did feel like we had stepped into Sicilian life. Caltagirone is a wonderful city, and without many if any tourists, which is what we like. The food was good and the kids enjoyed trying out specialities.
I would also like to comment on Guiseppe (property manager). This man was an absolute darling and looked after us so very well, I think he actually made the holiday. From the moment we met him he made us feel warm and very welcome. We also met his mother who was too very very nice and very warm. Please pass on our comments to him and say a huge big thank you for making us feel at home in Sicily.
Also a big thankyou for the ceramic jug. We will treasure this forever.
Finally, I will recommend SoloSicily to all my friends. Thanks for a great holiday

  • Richard and Irene Lee | April 2010

...we had a very good weekend in Sicily staying at the villa, visiting the local towns and enjoying good weather and good food.
One night as you know the heating supply ran out (Easter Sunday) but Giuseppe (property manager) came to fix it very quickly and was very polite even though he looked like he had come from a smart gathering.
The view from La Loggia is wonderful and the pool is nice, though only one of us was brave enough to use it. We made use of the barbecue one night which was a nice feature.
Not many people speak English in that part of Sicily, but everyone is very friendly and we will certainly go back to Sicily to visit more of it.
