The Poets' Corner

A contemporary and minimalist villa with pool in the captivating heart of the island

"...set in Sicily's heartland, within walking distance of Lake Pergusa, from the outside the house looks every inch the 19th-century aristocratic retreat it once was, but inside it's another world… A stunning pool in stirring surroundings makes for a fitting final chapter." The Guardian

Property

Steeped in character and in a magnificent rural setting, this splendid stone villa is strongly evocative of the aristocratic Sicily of the past. Yet while its architecture is every inch the typical Sicilian aristocratic summer house, inside, contemporary modern design and a fascination with the written word makes this villa completely unforgettable.

Outside: The lovely pool area is surrounded by paving and grass verges, with benched seating areas and sun loungers, and has a wonderful rural outlook.

Inside: Enter the villa via a light-filled small vestibule area, with chairs, which is adjacent to the main sitting room, a striking minimalist white-walled room, lined with books. The modern fully equipped kitchen and stylish dining-room, together with the library-style ‘book’ room, all have large French windows leading to the garden.

All the bedrooms are upstairs. The first floor offers accommodation in three very attractive double bedrooms and a single room, with two bathrooms. On the second floor, there is a lovely bright quadruple (one double and two singles) bedroom and one bathroom.

Area

The area around The Poets’ Corner is steeped in history, starting with the myth of the abduction of Persephone by Hades near Lake Pergusa. The lake is just five minutes by car from the villa and a lovely place for walks and bike rides. Also nearby is the museum at Aidone, home to the remarkable Venere di Morgantina statue.

Close to the provinces of Enna and Caltanissetta, acknowledged as the granary of the Roman Empire, The Poets’ Corner finds itself in a historically fascinating part of the island. Of particular significance is the Villa del Casale, built in the middle of the 4th Century AD as a hunting lodge by a Roman patrician and home to a series of extraordinary mosaics including the famous bikini-clad girls and the 'Corridor of the Great Hunt' depicting mosaics of elaborate hunting scenes and exotic animals.  Dating back to the end of the third century AD, the villa was uncovered at the end of the 1800’s and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Valley of the Temples, although a little further away, is also well worth a visit.

For those who want to explore more of Sicily’s natural environment, we strongly recommend a trip to the Madonie Mountains, the 40,000-hectare National Park that offers charming medieval villages, some great walking trails and a very strong tradition of food and wine.

If you prefer something a little livelier, head for the beaches at Catania or, even more action-packed still, have a spin on the famed race track around Lake Pergusa.

Extras

In mid-August, the town of Piazza Armerina hosts the ‘Palio dei Normanni’, a spectacular event involving a competition on horseback to commemorate the ousting of the Arabs from Sicily in 1060 by the heroic Norman invaders.

The pool is open to guests from June 1st to October 5th.
