This is the ultimate family holiday home, with a simple but comfortable interior, and a large garden and outdoor living area. Guests are welcomed by the owners with open arms and even the odd home-cooked meal. Unspoilt white sandy beaches on your doorstep, the baroque architecture of SE Sicily and the natural beauty of the Vendicari Nature Reserve are just some of the reasons to stay at Apolline.

Property details

Located in Pozzallo, a fishing town on Sicily’s southernmost coast and at the same latitude as Tunisia, the villa faces directly on to the sea and is just a few steps from one of Pozzallo’s loveliest sandy beaches. With white-washed walls and dark wooden furniture and beamed ceilings, the villa is extremely stylish and an excellent option for a family or group in search of a villa by the sea.

Outside: The villa sits amidst a large Mediterranean-style garden, with a well-tended lawn, scattered with palm trees and several shady seating areas. To one side of the lawn, steps lead up to a large jacuzzi surrounded by decking with sun loungers and a shady pergola. The garden is overlooked by a really spacious and very well-furnished covered patio, with a superb outdoor kitchen area, and an impressive built-in barbecue. The patio also has access to a second indoor independent kitchenette which is separate from the main villa.

Inside: Bright and welcoming, the villa is simply decorated with dark wooden beamed ceilings, white-washed wooden furniture and elegant dark tiling. Enter via a contemporary kitchen/living area with table and chairs and one sofa. A corridor leads to a lovely double bedroom with large French windows out to the garden, and a separate bathroom with shower. The other bedrooms (a double and a twin which can be converted to a double) and bathroom (with shower) are accessible, via a corridor, from the other side of the living area. All rooms have air-conditioning.

Area details

The road to the property weaves alongside a turquoise sea, passing through marshlands and lagoons that are home to flocks of pink flamingos and several species of migratory birds that pass through here during migration season. Reputedly the least visited of all of Sicily’s beaches, these endless expanses of sand and sparkling clean waters are just a hop away – perfect for an early morning dip or a place to sit and watch the sun go down at the end of the day.

In the immediate vicinity, you can take a pleasant stroll in the medieval town of Pozzallo, home to the 15th century Torre Cabrera, but the beaches are the big attraction. The wide sandy Pietrenere Beach is one of only four beaches in Sicily to have Blue Flag status and, with gently shelving sands, is an ideal beach for families with toddlers.

The nearby nature reserves of Vendicari and Cassibile are also home to several unspoilt beaches and are wonderful places for walkers. At the Cassibile Nature Reserve, oriental plane trees, oleander, willow and poplar tower over an undergrowth of sage, oregano, mint and rosemary in dense woods and nature lovers can stumble on rare orchids and dwarf palms.

Culturally, visitors to this area are spoilt for choice. Unravel Syracuse’s extraordinary history through its Greek, Byzantine, Norman and Baroque architecture, visit the splendid baroque town of Noto, and further west, Modica, Scicli and Ragusa.

Additional Information

If you visit in May or June, performances of the Greek tragedies at the theatre in Syracuse are a special treat.

The Jacuzzi is open to guests from April 4th to November 2nd.

Reviews from clients staying at Apolline

  • Marion Humpert - Germany | October 2013

    Feine Insel, Palmenstrand
    und es baumelt uns're Seele
    Fischerboote, weißer Sand
Wein rinnt abends durch die Kehle.

    Alle Sinne auf Empfang
    auf dem Feuer Gambas grillen,
    Roter Sonnenuntergang.
So kann mann die Sehnsucht stillen.

    Keine Hektik und kein Stress
und der Wind singt in der Stille.
    Zeit verfliegt nicht per Express.
    Unbezahlbar die Idylle.

    Urlaubstage aufgezehrt
was sonst nervt, das wird vertrieben.

  • Julia Scirotto - You & Your Wedding Magazine | September 2013

We are back from Sicily and had an absolutely wonderful time! The villa owners were so warm and welcoming, and the property was fantastic. They left us the most incredible biscotti as a welcome present, along with some other local treats, and we ended up driving into Ispica twice to find the pasticceria. We mixed beach days with exploring the area, and particularly loved Modica and Noto. It was a really beautiful trip to a beautiful place, thank you so much.

  • Stefano Donazzan - Italy | August 2013

Qui tutto è magnifico; clima mite, mare pulito e caldo, casa confortevole, giardino lussureggiante.

  • Sarah Day - United Kingdom | August 2013

Thank you for a wonderful week in the beautiful villa Apolline. It was great from the beginning to the end – from the warm welcome, the lovely pool & beach & great outdoor oven & kitchen – we loved it all! Sam, James & Georgia loved playing in the beautiful garden & we enjoyed dining al fresco (particularly with all the good Sicilian wine).

  • Robert Warner - United Kingdom | August 2013

I was interested to see that Apolline was recommended by the travel writer in today's Times newspaper. Good marketing!!!

  • Simone Kreuz - Germany | July 2013

I am very sad that the nice time in Sicily is ending because it was a wonderful time in your holiday house. The time passed very fast .
It was so great that you offered us the trip with the paddle boat. The best of the house was the beautiful and wonderful garden. I loved it to relax in your garden.
Thank you for the great time!

  • Tom Kellerman - United Kingdom | June 2013

We came to this magical house with three kitchens from harsh, exhausting London in the footsteps of 2 family heroes. The first of these fictional, although quintessentially Sicilian, Salvo Montalbano , the second Giorgio Locatelli , author of „Made in Sicily” a „bible” of a cookbook.
The three kitchens have been put to good use with heavenly meals prepared from local ingredients that are beyond compare. Despite a complete lack of Italian, we have met nothing but kindness, patience and hospitality! Apolline is very special. The garden so beautiful.
We have had fantastic avian company: the gold-finches of Camilleri's stories, the opossums and a pair of hoepoes; to add to all this, a silent shy black snake (non- venomous) summed itself of the warm tiles, reminiscent of D.H. Lawrence' s beautiful poem that I am sure was penned in Italy.
Ragusa, Modica & Noto, towns of incomparable beauty & fabulous restaurants.
One host at La Rusticana, Renata, in Ragusa Ibla took us wine tasting and this afternoon we will buy an extra suitcase to get our treasures home... There is none of the cynicism, material greed, dishonesty present in so many holiday destinations in this glorious, unspoiled corner of Sicily. Long may it last!

  • John & Susan Haverty - Ireland | June 2013

    House *****
Everything about the house is just perfect, from the furnishing & decorations to the
    facilities i.e. : wi-fi, A/C, Tvs etc. TOP QUALITY.

    Location *****
Fantastic... beautiful beach within …. and it might as well be your private facility.

    Garden *****
Not sure we even got to see it all, it's so big. Loved our daily figs!

    Area *****
Loved this part of Sicily. Actually preferred Pozzallo to the more touristic towns.
    Recommend „Tonno Rosso”and „Sabbenerica” restaurants.

    Service *****
As others have said, Franco is an exceptional host who wants his guests to have the best time. A natural.

Summary: Exceeded expectations. The place made feel good for having found and booked it.
    Hope to come back again!

  • Giuseppe Mangano - United Kingdom | May 2013

We have spent the most wonderful week here with my friends. Franco & Mariella, our friendly hosts have been a mine of great information and lovely company. The two children have loved the beach and the pool returning here after a day's excursion has been the highlight for them.
The villa has been very well through cut and the outdoor kitchen and dining area in particular are great places to spend an evening.

  • Eva Parigi - Italy | April 2013

  • Laszlo Kellner - United Kingdom | December 2012

Franceso and his wife are lovely hosts who helped us with every detail. The house and its garden is just lovely, ideally for outdoor life even in the winter. The house is well equipped with all the necessary facilities you can wish for. We had a great time and will certainly recommend the villa to our friends who are considering visiting Sicily.

  • Stanislav Ovrutski - Germany | October 2012

  • Doris and Thomas Leitner - Germany | September 2012

  • Annie Zanella - Italy | September 2012

  • Vincente Casciaro - Spain | August 2012

Apolline exceeded our expectations from the beginning.
The whole structure is designed with sophistication and attention to the guest needs and fundamentally, integrated with its natural environment.
It has multiple options of beach: a private beach of rocks a few meters and another public with fine sand at 100 meters of the property. We've discovered with our children the natural wealth of the place: from octopuses, sea urchins up to a small live hippocampus.
For our surprise, we found a small pool in the middle of the park, overlooking the sea, which became an alternative to the beach.
We discovered the Sicilian cuisine options, always led by Franco and Mariella (owners), really true lovers of Sicily. They've been always available with warmth and professionalism assisting us with their guidance in everything we've needed during our stay (shopping, restaurants, food, etc.). We won't forget the red shrimps and pasta with fish cooked by themselves.
The structure is equipped with TVs, Sky TV and access to high quality internet. We have had no difficulty in being online both to work and for personal issues.
In summary, we recommend Apolline. We hope to repeat the experience soon.

  • Anna Meseguer - Spain | August 2012

The vacation in Villa Apolline were just wonderful. Francesco and his family were waiting for us in the house with a nice supper and wine, in a charming and comfortable atmosphere. The house was perfectly equipped and the garden espectacular. Everything was perfect and made our stay in Sicily unforgettable.

  • Lucilla Croce - Germany | July 2012

The house is very nice, well equipped, everything perfectly functioning. The garden huge, well kept, beautiful. Although there is access to the sea on a rocky coast just in front of the house, we found the small sandy beach just 100m away very convenient: it is often deserted, and also on the weekend just a few people appear. It is quiet, with very nice sand and clear water, and the coast around it provides a nice scenery. The location of the house is perfect if you want a quiet and relaxing holiday. In fact perhaps the only disadvantage is that the closest supermarket is 13 km away, and even small shops are a rarity in the area (we found a baker 4 km away). The area is fantastic, with green, agricultural landscape and long, empty sandy beaches. From the house you can see the southern tip of Sicily, Isola delle Correnti, and in 30 min drive you can reach it. The owners are extremely hospital, and really dedicated to make you comfortable and satisfied in the house. They are always available for any question or need, and they gave us indications on how to get fresh fish, where to find good restaurants. One evening, after taking us to a fishermen area where we bought fantastic shrimps, Mr.Leone cooked them for us on the house' s barbecue! Although we were there in the hot season, the fresh wind kept the temperatures always in a perfect and pleasant range (just above 30deg). In the late afternoon you can enjoy short trips (within 30-40 km) to the fantastic sicilian barock cities of Modica, Noto, Ragusa-Ibla. Dinner in nice restaurants there or on the sea cities of Pozzallo or Marina di Modica is certainly recommendable. All in all a very good choice, a great vacation and certainly a strong recommendation for anyone wanting to enjoy the best and quietest part of Sicily.

  • Lisa and Philippe de Mondesir - United States | June 2012

Apolline's owners spared no expense in creating their Southeastern Sicily upscale villa with a vast shaded patio, a raised sundeck with a dipping pool and both an indoor and several outdoor kitchens. Set in the middle of a large park like floral and cacti garden by the sea, one is hard pressed to leave this enclosed tranquil haven save to wander down the pathway to stroll along the beach and swim in the clear blue Mediterranean Sea. Spoiled by the unexpected gifts of local fruits and vegetables from the extraordinarily gracious owners, and if you are as lucky as we were, by a home cooked meal of local fare, you will revel in the good fortune that befell you. We arrived worn and weary strangers to this region and left very well rested and feeling like members of the owners' family. A rare and cherished experience we hope to repeat many times in future.

  • Elfi Eberle - Germany | March 2012

It was love at first sight! The place is truly incredible. With not one but two kitchens outside, one inside and a BBQ area we never wanted to actually leave the house. Of course the fresh veggies and fruits delivered almost daily for free by Franco, the patron of the house didn't help! The property has everything and much more, starting from the interior,
the owners did not save time nor money to transform "Apolline" into a luxury yet true Sicilian home!
A small beach is only a few steps away and made the experience one to remember. There is literally no artificial sounds, you fall asleep with the sound of the sea and you wake up kissed by the sun. We also had the pleasure to taste some of the local cuisine, Franco knows the owner of some outstanding red wine and the best olive oil I have ever come across, make sure you ask for a bottle of "Le Case di Lavinia". After we stayed for a few days Angela who, to our surprise spoke
perfect German, cleaned the entire property, again free of charge and gave us the best recipies of the local food. I can only say the entire trip was worth every penny and we are difinetely will be back! Me and my family can highly recommend "Apolline" and its wonderful owners!

  • Ettore Brambilla - Italy | March 2012

spiaggia garantisce contemporaneamente tranquillita' e riservatezza.

  • Gjertrud & Martin - United Kingdom | September 2011

We had such a great time staying at your villa and hope we'll be able to come back to your lovely house in the next future.

  • Andy Berner - United Kingdom | August 2011

Villa nicer than the pictures. We were pleasantly surprised. Standard over all was very high. Sleeping was very comfortable with nice beds, air conditioning and ceiling fans. Much higher than typical standard experienced in previous trips to Italy. Setup of Villa was very well thought out. Everything for the beach, setup of kitchen, etc. Once again, high standard. Beach was also better than expectations. Not crowded, and perfect for young kids. Excellent size for 4 adults and 2 children. Garden was beautiful and kids enjoyed it a lot.
