Villas in Sicily near Ragusa

RagusaRagusa province, in the area of Iblei Mountains, was brought back to life after the devastating earthquake of 1693, and its towns and villages bear a marked baroque looking.

Ragusa's historical centre, the beautiful and ancient Ragusa Ibla, spreads among rocky hills displaying a multitude of elegant buildings, both noble mansions – notable are Palazzo Nicastro and Palazzo Cosentini - and austere and imposing churches like S. Giorgio Church, remarkable for its wide staircase and its convex façade on three orders, and S. Giorgio Vecchio Church, with its splendid gothic-catalan portal. Interesting for their symbolic value are the figures carved on the façade of Palazzo Zacco and Palazzo Bestini, whose big masks evoke common people, aristocracy and middle class.

Modica, famous mostly for its first quality and inventive chocolate production, boasts several baroque style buildings on its own, among which the magnificent S. Giorgio Church, with its solemn 250 steps staircase and the nice panorama you can enjoy from it, S. Pietro Church, and Palazzo Polara, still maintaining its original XVIII century furniture.

Two small baroque jewels are also Ispica and Scicli , whose refined buildings (for example the elegant Palazzo Beneventano and S. Bartolomeo Church) rise on the charming background of a beautiful valley among three hills.
