Effortless and oh-so relaxing: live simply in a beachside cottage in SE Sicily

Exclusive to soloSicily

Location Features Surroundings Ideal for Ispica

Direct beach access
Outdoor kitchen & BBQ
Al fresco dining

Ragusa Ibla
Siracusa & Ortigia

Beach holidays
Sea & surf

This villa embodies the very best of Sicily, drawing together the region’s white sandy beaches and raw natural beauty and an almost overwhelming range of cultural treasures, with the added bonus of a spectacular setting right on the beach.

The cottage is simple and unpretentious, but with everything you would need for a family holiday. For two families travelling together, Zafira’s sister cottage, Amaltea, is immediately next door and the two properties share access to the beach.

Outside: The cottage overlooks an extensive lawn, dotted with sun beds and with pockets of shade provided by soaring palm trees. Opposite the cottage, a covered terrace with a dining area, barbecue and outdoor kitchen is the perfect spot for al fresco meals.

There is direct access to the beach from the garden. Although it is not a private beach, its inaccessible location means that it generally remains very quiet and often deserted.

There is plenty of space for parking within the property grounds.

Guests at Zafira should be aware that the villa is directly adjacent to, and shares most of the outdoor areas with, another property (Amaltea). To guarantee complete privacy, or if you are considering holidaying with friends, we recommend booking both properties.

Inside: The cottage is simply furnished, with terracotta tiled floors and dark wooden shutters on the windows. The bedrooms - one double and one triple (with a bunk bed and a single bed) - are situated on one side of the corridor alongside the smallish but modern bathroom with shower. On the other side of the corridor, the attractive kitchen has a table and chairs for six. From here, a door leads directly out to the covered dining area and outdoor kitchen.

Local sights

There are several excellent beaches in the area including one at Marina di Modica which is great for surfers and windsurfers and at Pozzallo which offers a huge stretch of white sand that can be busy in July and August but remains delightfully peaceful in low season.

Natural highlights in the region are numerous. The nearby Nature Reserves of Vendicari and Cassibile are as appealing to swimmers, thanks to their crystal clear water, as to walkers; and hiking at the Cava d’Ispica involves spectacular scenery and some extraordinary archaeological highlights.

For baroque art and architecture, the towns of Modica, Ragusa Ibla, Noto and Scicli offer a seemingly endless supply of cultural treasures and sights. Events and celebrations such as the Infiorata di Noto flower festival, the Greek Theatre Festival in Siracusa and the Cioccobarroco and Madonna Vasa Vasa in Modica punctuate the annual calendar; and, at the pretty fishing village of Marzamemi, worth visiting at any time for its superb seafront fish restaurants and its lively piazza, there is an International Film Festival in July.

The shops at Ispica are less than 20 minutes away by car and the nearest supermarket and restaurants half that distance.

Local experiences

Show the kids how much fun sight-seeing can be with a visit to Bonajuto’s chocolate factory in Modica, where specialities include chocolate, spice and almond-filled impanatigghi biscuits and chocolate-filled mini cannoli. A pizza at La Contea in Modica should also go down quite well.

Take an evening stroll in Pozzallo, followed by dinner at the excellent Tonno Rosso restaurant where the fish is the freshest you will find and every dish a work of art.

If you are interested in taking a taste of Sicily home with you, you can take a cookery class in a baroque palace in Modica.

Get a glimpse of south-east Sicily through the eyes of Montalbano, the island’s most famous fictitious detective, and take a day trip that incorporates visits to Ragusa Ibla, Scicli and other locations used in the TV series.

Windsurfing or kitesurfing in Pozzallo is available to all levels, from beginners to experienced surfers. Contact us for more information on equipment hire or courses.

Boat trips are an excellent way to get a different perspective of the island. A boat trip around Siracusa, journeying through papyrus reeds, past sea caves and glimpses of an ancient Greek temple, is an enjoyable excursion for children.

During the summer months, sun loungers and umbrellas are set up on the beach for the villa guests.
